Answers to frequently asked questions

I will publish my answers to any questions I receive from you below so that we can develop a common knowledge repository here over time. I will only publish your name with your permission.

Why do you offer this <project>, this device already exists?

Commercially successful telephones came onto the market in the late 19th century - but did they look the same as your mobile? All projects are themed around exploring the given topic. You are required to find out what already exists during your initial literature search. Then you have to find any gaps in current knowledge or functionality and then ways to close these gaps with the device you are building. This way you will have contributed something new to society. If you are afraid that you won't be able to discover anything new - take a different project.

What exactly do I have to deliver and by when?

The ITEE Thesis Site has been prepared by UQ to answer any administrative questions for you. Follow the menu items on the right to find out about the topic selection process, the assessment items and their deadlines. Study the marking criteria linked to from every assessment item to find out what to place importance on in your work.

My projects will take a year (two semesters) to complete. In a nutshell, during this time you have to complete an online academic integrity tutorial, write a project proposal, give a seminar and attend seminars of other students, create a poster, demonstrate your device and write a thesis document. Note that Master students have a few additional assessment items such as writing an annotated bibliography and a conference paper.

How do I enroll?

Before enrolling in this course you should introduce yourself via email and tell me which projects you would be most interested in working on, and how you think current similar products could still be improved. We can then quickly see if any of those topics are still available and discuss the best approach for your work.

Once we come to an agreement you can choose your course and enroll in it via SInet (you will have to enroll in the same course code again in semester 2). I will then enroll you in the chosen topic in the ITEE project database and make the other resources available to you. We will officially start with a kick-off meeting in week 1 where you will meet all the other students working on my projects.
